Sub-domains or sub-folders?

Which do you prefer, for site organization, sub-domains or sub-folders?

Or, does it not matter at all, as long as the site navigates fairly easily?

Post why, if you don't mind.

Here's an example if you don't know what I mean:

Sub-domain: talescentral.livejournal.com <--------- the "talescentral." at the beginning makes this a subdomain of "livejournal"

Sub-folder: google.com/adsense <--------- the " /adsense " is a folder located within google.com .

Would the sub domains and subfolders like, behave differently? From what you're describing, I guess they don't, but I'm curious. If they don't, then I guess the choice that is the easiest for you would be best. If they do, describe the differences.

No, they'd function the exact same. I've chosen sub-folders--I really should've just closed this topic, but I was just interested to see if anyone's ever *actually* had a preference for whatever reason.
